The New Fringe was established in c. 2011. Although it has now expanded to include all art forms, it was originally a group for visual artists only, and was based at Church View in Doncaster.
After 2015 our records become a bit sparse. However since 2018, The New Fringe has enjoyed a revival with the help of Kim and Sacha, two art students from Doncaster College.
In 2019 The New Fringe took over a town centre building on Cleveland Street, previously known as Atteys Solicitors. The opening event for this location was known as "Artbomb" - a huge open exhibition, with each artist taking over a room and making it theirs. Despite the cold, the abandoned feel of the building, and limited access to electricity, the event was a huge success! For around six months this building became our home, and we built a thriving creative hub there with exhibitions, workshops, groups, performances, and networking events.
We have now moved to a new building on Portland Place, which is slightly smaller but in a much better state of repair!
Address: Unit 1 Portland Place, Doncaster DN1 3DF
The New Fringe is a platform for independent, progressive artists in the Doncaster area. We now share a central art space where members have the freedom to work together, socialise and share ideas. Such reciprocal opportunities involve events, workshops, skillset sharing, healthy debates and showcasing artwork through exhibitions to the wider public. Commitment from members is nominal, however The New Fringe is run by a small group of volunteers and so encourages the development of an art community where members give as well as gain.
We aspire to become a hub connecting into the wider regional and national art landscape, providing an inspirational resource where artists and those interested in art are invited to collaborate and expand on their creativity.
The Fringe asks that members adhere to a general set of values, other than this we encourage artists to test the boundary of their own limitations.
